By age two, the "toddle" of early walking gives way to more confident movement. Your child is likely beginning to run, stand on tiptoe, and kick a ball forward without losing their balance. They can pull toys behind them on a string and carry large toys while navigating the room. In terms of fine motor skills, two-year-olds are moving past the fist-grasp and are beginning to hold crayons with their fingers, scribble spontaneously, and build towers of four or more blocks.

The 24-to-36-month window is a period of rapid synaptogenesis in the prefrontal cortex. This means your child is becoming a little problem solver. They can find objects even when hidden under two or three layers, and they are beginning to sort objects by shape and color. You will also see the dawn of "make-believe" play, where a block becomes a phone, or a box becomes a car. This symbolic thinking is a massive leap in cognitive development.

Prepare for the language explosion! While every child develops at their own pace, a typical two-year-old points to objects or pictures when named, recognizes the names of familiar people and body parts, and begins to string two words together (e.g., "More milk," "Go bye-bye"). They are also much better at following simple, two-step instructions like "Pick up the ball and put it in the box."

The "terrible twos" are actually the "terrific twos"—it is just a period of intense boundary testing. Your two-year-old is becoming acutely aware of themselves as separate individuals. They will proudly declare "Mine!" and enthusiastically imitate the behavior of adults and older children. While they still primarily engage in "parallel play" (playing alongside others rather than directly with them), they are becoming increasingly interested in the company of other children.
