Six genuinely decodable Easter words: egg, hen, bun, chick, jam, grass. Four are short and fully decodable straight away; chick (ch) and grass (double s, gr blend) add a gentle stretch.

Common questions

Why "hen" and "chick" instead of "rabbit" and "bunny"?

Rabbit is a two-syllable word with a double consonant — real reading, but not first-year reading. The rabbit's in the pictures. The words on the lines are ones a beginner can decode start to finish, which is what builds confidence.

My child gets stuck on "chick". Any tips?

Ch is a digraph — two letters making one sound. Cover the ick and practise just "ch" a few times, then reveal the rest. Our CH worksheet drills it properly if it needs more work.

Does this work for a non-religious Easter or spring theme?

Yes — the pictures are eggs, chicks, hens, buns and garden scenes rather than anything religious, so it works as a general spring kit.

How do I use the flashcards?

Show the picture, let your child say the word, then say the first sound together. Two minutes is plenty. Do them before the worksheet, not after.
