Letter N phonics worksheets — free printable activities

A free phonics worksheet for the letter N and the /n/ sound — the sixth sound in the s-a-t-p-i-n sequence, and the one that brings the first little sentences within reach. Part of the Magic 7 Activity Pack, which covers the seven foundational sounds children meet at the start of their reading journey.

Why letter N matters

N completes the classic s-a-t-p-i-n starting set. With all six sounds your child can read dozens of words — nap, pin, tin, tan, pan, in, an, nip, sin, snap, snip — plus the two little grammar words in and an that glue first sentences together: "a pin is in a tin."

The /n/ sound is a stretchy nasal — you can hum it (nnnnn) as long as you like, which makes it easy to blend. Air flows through the nose, not the mouth: have your child hold their nose mid-nnnn and feel the sound stop. Kids love that trick.

The Magic 7 Activity Pack covers seven sounds in one PDF. The Letter N lesson page has three activities:

Activity 1 — A letter-N-shaped maze. The letter N drawn as a maze with a START and END. Kids trace the path with a finger or pencil while saying /nnn/.

Activity 2 — Find and circle. Small icons on the page (nest, nut, and several distractors). The child circles every one that starts with /n/.

Activity 3 — Letter tracing. A model lowercase n on the left, six light-gray practice letters to trace while saying /nnn/ aloud.

How to teach the /n/ sound

A simple five-minute approach:

1. Show the letter. Point at n. Say /nnn/ — stretch it like a hum. Have your child copy.
2. Use the action. "Pretend to be a noisy airplane — nnnnnn!" Arms out, sound stretched.
3. Find things that start with /n/. Nose (the easiest one — it's on their face), neck, nut, nest, night.
4. Read new words together. nap, pin, tin, in, an. Then try a first sentence: "a pin is in a tin."
5. Stop while it's still fun.

What comes after N

M is the seventh and final Magic 7 sound — another stretchy nasal — adding mat, map, man, am and completing the foundation set.

When this worksheet is the right level

Use this worksheet if:

• Your child is 4-5 years old
• They know /s/, /a/, /t/, /p/ and /i/ (or are working through the Magic 7 in order)
• They can blend simple three-letter words

• Your child can already read three-letter words confidently

Common questions

What sound does N make?

A voiced nasal /n/ — the tongue rests behind the top teeth and the sound hums out through the nose. You can stretch it as long as you like, which makes it one of the easiest sounds to blend.

My child says /m/ instead of /n/. Is that normal?

Sometimes — /m/ and /n/ are both nasals and sound similar. The difference is the mouth: /m/ has lips closed, /n/ has lips open with the tongue up. A mirror makes the difference visible.

Why is the N worksheet part of a multi-letter pack?

Because N's job is finishing the s-a-t-p-i-n word set. The first group is taught together because the letters work together to make words and sentences.
