2nd grade phonics worksheets

Second grade phonics is about patterns. First grade unlocked the big skills — digraphs, blends and magic-e. Second grade builds on them with the vowel teams and r-controlled vowels that appear in almost every sentence your child will ever read.

Start-of-year review

Before the new patterns, a quick check that the first-grade skills are still solid. A week or two of review saves months of confusion later.

Common questions

What phonics should a 2nd grader know?

By the end of second grade, most children read words with vowel teams, r-controlled vowels and common two-syllable patterns — enough to read most early chapter books. Every child moves at their own pace.

What order should I teach second grade phonics?

The order on this page: a quick review of first-grade skills, then vowel teams (the year's biggest topic), then r-controlled vowels, then longer words.

My second grader still guesses at words — what helps?

Guessing usually means a missing pattern, not a missing effort. Find the gap (the reading age estimator can help), go back to that pattern's worksheets, and rebuild from there. Going back is going forward.
